The Auction

Gilbert Jonas was a civil rights activist, an entrepreneur and an author. His book, Freedom’s Sword: The NAACP and the Struggle Against Racism in America 1909-1969 , with a forward by Julian Bond, is the most comprehensive narrative of the organization ever written. He is known, as well, for his achievements as an advisor to the African independence movement in the late 1950’s. He was acting director of the Far East section of the Peace Corps in the 1960’s. Less known about Gil Jonas is the fact that he was a collector extraordinaire who had a keen eye for American Illustration, Posters, Mid-Century Modern Furniture and Art Deco Design that encompassed all areas. The Vintage Radio Collection of this sale is a testament to the comprehensive collecting enthusiasm of this extraordinary individual. His country house in Forestburgh, New York was a showcase for his collections as was his apartment in New York City.
