Lot 87A
Two Vintage Ron Galella Photographs of Jagger & Bowie and Jagger & Lennon
Without question, Robert Galella is the world’s most famous celebrity photographer. His landmark efforts forty years ago effectively created the world of the paparazzi. Today Mr. Galella’s work can be found in extremely fine art galleries around the country, and a recent motion picture about his life won the “Best Director of a Documentary” award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010.
The following lot consists of two vintage photographic prints: John Lennon and David Bowie at a 17th Annual Grammy Awards after-party; and one of John Lennon, May Pang, and Mick Jagger attending an American Film Institute Salute to James Cagney. March 13, 1974. Both photographs are signed front and back by the photographer. Lennon & Bowie: Height: 10 inches x 8 inches, paper: 11 x 14 inches; Jagger & Lennon: Height: 8 inches x 10 inches, paper: 11 x 14 inches.
It was Mr. Galella’s habit to make approximately ten prints of images he wanted to retain in the days immediately following the taking of the photos. Whereas one can order newly printed Galella images, the following are indeed prints from the time Mr. Galella took the landmark photos.
