An unprecedented auction is taking place to help Connecticut's Mystic Aquarium fund its recent efforts to rescue five endangered Beluga Whales. Among the fascinating lots being offered are the naming rights for three of the Belugas.
In a widely reported news story from earlier this year, the Mystic Aquarium - North America’s foremost institution dedicated to researching and protecting ocean life - took extraordinary steps (including the use of a giant-sized Air Force C-130 cargo plane) to secure the future of these beautiful, highly intelligent whales. Under the careful watch of the Aquarium’s veterinarians, the Belugas will soon be entering their new habitat in Mystic.
To help fund this multi-million dollar effort, Guernsey’s is conducting a much needed auction. And yes, three of the lots are “naming rights" to three of the Belugas. The successful “naming" bidders will also be receiving a beautiful bronze sculpture of a Beluga created for the occasion by highly accomplished artist, Dan Ostermiller.
Among the other offerings are several extremely rare vintage carved wooden carousel Greyhound dogs and one of the original carousel horses from New York City’s famed 1908 Central Park carousel. Other lots range from a stunning Porsche Speedster replica (great vintage looks with modern technology), two Vespa motor scooters, a Beetle Cat sailboat, wonderful paintings and sculptural works by noted artists and even prized tickets to the finals at the US Open Tennis Tournament!
A few seats remain for the gala live auction at the Aquarium where entertainment will include Bob Marley’s original Wailer’s (Wailer - Whaler!) Can’t attend in person? Bid online at Liveauctioneers.com and Invaluable.com.

In May 2021, Mystic Aquarium garnered worldwide attention for rescuing five beluga whales from a dire situation in Canada. With support from the United States and Canadian governments, the whales were transported to Mystic Aquarium in an extraordinary operation via military aircraft. Beluga whales are an endangered and highly threatened species worldwide. The five rescued beluga whales join Mystic Aquarium's existing trio - Juno, Natasha, and Kela - in the largest marine mammal habitat in North America. This transfer not only protects the new whales' health and well-being, it will also accelerate Mystic Aquarium's whale research, which is already helping to preserve global whale populations for future generations.
These naming opportunities will provide essential financial support for Mystic Aquarium's conservation, education, and research progams. The winning names will earn worldwide attention and will represent the philanthropic commitment of the successful bidders.
Mystic Aquarium is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire people to care for and protect our ocean planet through conservation, education, and research. Mystic Aquarium is internationally recognized for veterinary care and research related to marine mammals, including beluga whales. The organization reaches over one million people annually.
