Zero Mostel Self Portrait

Zero Mostel was one of the most iconic stage and screen comedic actors of the 20th Century. He originated the role of Tevya in “Fiddler on the Roof”, Pseudolus in “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum”, and most uproariously Max Bialystock in “The Producers”.

Zero was also a talented artist whose bold strokes expressed his theatricality on canvas and paper.
This ink and charcoal on paper self portrait entitled “ZERO”, shows the artist at his proudest moment. This self portrait was featured in an article in The New York Times about Zero Mostel entitled, ‘A Clown Harboring an Inner Artist” by Mel Gussow on August 5, 2001.

“ZERO” was purchased in 2001 from the Gallery by the Sea in Port Clyde, ME near Zero’s summer home. A letter of authenticity signed by Josh Mostel, Zero’s actor son, is attached.
