Before he catapulted the world of Pop Art into the global psyche, Andy Warhol was an accomplished fashion illustrator. He worked closely with the 1950’s leading fashion publications and retailers, producing works that - looking back now - clearly reveal his extraordinary emerging talent.
No on seems sure how many of Andy’s early fashion works survived those early years. The artist himself assembled some of these illustrations which then appeared in several books he authored. It is quite likely that many of these drawings suffered the fate of many illustrations of the day... they simply were tossed out on occasional art department purges.
It was during one of those purges at Ingenue Magazine decades ago when a new Art Director suggested that if employees were interested, they should take what art they wished. The rest was to be detroyed. A bright, young assistant saw the opportunity to own an original by the talented Andy Warhol and took home the drawing that appears here. Now, for the first time since it left that Art Department bin many decades ago, this exciting drawing is being offered to the public.
