The photographs are of the greatest artists of the last century: Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Marc Chagall. Each photo captures the essence of that artist, reflecting either their inner depths or passionate natures, and sometimes both.
Sanford Roth was a globe-trotting photographer most known for the photographs he took of celebrities in their quiet moments, most notably James Dean. His photography graced the covers and interiors of many of the most popular and prestigious magazines in Europe and the United States in the mid-20th-century. Born in New York, he spent much of his professional life criss-crossing the Atlantic, living in many of the cultural and fashion capitals of the world. His photography is distinctive, portraying the rarely-seen, heartfelt moments in the lives of very public people. Roth’s photographs are in museums around the world, including MoMA. Mr. Roth died in 1962 while in Rome.
