Lot 891* John F. Kennedy's PT 109 Patch

Military Insignia from the uniform of Lt. John F. Kennedy. Worn while completing naval service during World War II in the Solomon Islands. Black and white embroidery features a mosquito atop a torpedo. 2 inches in diameter.

While serving in the South Pacific, John F. Kennedy sent this patch to his young cousin Marylou, the daughter of his Aunt and Godmother, Loretta, when he learned that Mary was unhappy and homesick at boarding school in Rhode Island. John F. Kennedy told her to wear his PT patch on her school uniform, and instructed her to show courage. "Mary," he said, "be brave kiddo, I'm not so thrilled about where I am either." This act of kindness is a glimpse into the compassionate, caring side of John F. Kennedy.

Many believe [including Kennedy family members interviewed] that it was John F. Kennedy's experience aboard PT 109 that inspired him to future greatness. This singular patch, consigned by a family member, is believed to be the only such symbol retained of John F. Kennedy's days aboard PT 109.
