Carousel Sheild

Carousel Shield, American, c. 1905. Around the center enclosure that hid from view a carousel's center pole, gears and motor were carousel "shields". Made of wood, these shields often framed mirrors which served to reflect the twirling animals and lights of the moving carousel. Most shield were two-dimensional, relying on painted decoration for their appeal. This shield is far more outstanding in that it has detailed, three-dimensional carvings. It is both rare and handsome.

Estimate: $1500 - $2000
