Gustav Dentzel Carousel Ostrich

When Dentzel added the exotic ostrich to his lineup of menagerie figures sometime between 1900 and 1910, it was a relatively unknown bird. Interest in ostriches was thought to have been generated by traveling circuses and hence the carousel carver responded. The Dentzel carousel ostrich is promently featured on pages 72 and 73 of "The Carousel Animal" by Tobin Fraley.
