Herschell Spillman Carousel Dog

Just as they are in real life, dogs have always been amongst the beloved of all carousel figures. Yet very few have appeared on vintage carousels... very few were carved. This auction features the recently discovered quartet of greyhounds and the rare Herschell Spillman dog seen here. Pictures and descriptions of Spillman dogs can be seen on page 88 of Charlotte Dinger's "Art of the Carousel" and page 206 of "Painted Ponies" by Mann, Shenk and Stevens. The dog being offered in this auction comes from an important private collection. In 1989, the collection was displayed at the Stamford Museum (Connecticut) and described in depth in The Carousel News & Trader, October, 1989.
