In the style of Charles Looff. American, Coney Island Style. Fine, older paint.
When we were first alerted to the four greyhounds being sold in this auction, the consignor believed that they created for a carousel from the 1950's. When detailed photographs of the greyhounds arrived in our office, the images suggested that indeed the greyhounds had been carved by Charles Looff. The photographs were submitted to an independent leading expert on carousel carvings who informed us that she believed that the works indeed were carved by Looff. However, inasmuch as we are continuing our study of the greyhounds, they are being offered as "in the style of Charles Looff" and buyers are bidding on their own awareness and judgement as to the origins of these handsome figures.
